  • Japan: Robot Nation.

I heard about lifelike androids being manufactured in Japan about a year or two ago. However, this short documentary is a real eye-opener about the real motivation behind their desire for robotics in their everyday lives.

Knowledge is power -- Use it to your advantage, and learn something.

Man, that's one disturbing and interesting video about Nippon! I guess that's what you get when you live on an island separated from the rest of the world in which the country's population thinks they can be auto-sufficient. I'm not going to get into details since I don't know all the facts that could explain that kind of situation. Anyways, very interesting video and I was able to get a majority of what those Brazilians were saying without the translation. Concerning the robots (21 in particular), they look pretty cool especially at helping people for easy chores. That seal robot can be pretty useful with the elders, especially to keep them company when they feel really lonely. However, I'm really not ready for those android robots despite me really liking technology. Bottom line, after seeing this, I honestly don't know if it's the right thing for my friend to make his life there with his Japanese girlfriend, especially since he's a foreigner. However, he will have a great time testing those technologies if he do stay there. Alright, I'll try to catch some sleep now.

hmm can't watch this at work but I will later when I get back home

Thanks for posting this! I found it really interesting to watch. Those robots scare me so much. The human looking ones at least. That white one that helps with daily chores wasn't so bad. But I keep thinking about all those movies like iRobot where the robots become evil and start attacking humans. If that robot said "touch my cheek" to me... I'd be afraid that it'd bite me!!!! O_O

i actually saw a demonstration at Japan Day in Central Park last year. dunno if it was back this time around. still pretty cool

@kachino - Yeah honestly -- I thought the idea of robots helping out with senior citizens is probably the best way to utilize that type of technology, since they are the ones who may need it the most (both with physical help and emotional support with companionship).

In terms of replacing human workers with robots, I'm not sure if that is a good idea, because 1) it will leave other workers out of jobs, which necessary to stimulate and maintain Japan's economy; and 2) it may only perpetuate the existing problem in Japan right now (instead of focusing on ways to increase their population/birth rates, they are choosing to make robots, in place of humans, which may eventually lead to the "extinction" of their people)... Basically, what i'm saying is, "Our race is declining? Oh, no worries, we have robots who can take over and function in society as if they are real human beings." But, what happens if the ratio of androids is greater than real human beings in Japan? Sooner or later if this trend continues to dangerously declining numbers of real people, there may be no one else to sustain their race...

@lizzie_wizzie - Hi! Yeah no problem at all! I'm happy to share information like this to everybody! It's important that we all learn about the world and what's going on around us! LOL yeah those life-like androids are pretty creepy... I remember first seeing a video about an android and I literally almost felt sick to my stomach watching it... Anyway, yeah the robot helping out with chores would be useful to us especially for the elderly and handicapped, who may need physical help the most. And LOL at your comment about being afraid of being bit!! LOL yeah I would be afraid to go near it, nonetheless TOUCH IT, too! And hopefully, robots and technology does not advance to the point where they can make their own free decisions and start attacking us. .. Scary.

  • mZdejavuZ

@KingSolomonNY - Wow, really? Was it almost as life-like as the androids in the video? That's insane...

  • J4y_J4Y

Robots are going to be the end of us, that was so creepy....

    =/

  • mZdejavuZ

@J4y_J4Y - yeah... it definitely makes you think huh?

I wish the rest of the world would slow down on the baby-making. Our population growth has put too much pressure on fisheries, the soil, arable land, and the air we breathe.

Thanks for posting that video, it is very thought-provoking.

  • mZdejavuZ

@MelFamy - No problem, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I think the root of the problem isover-consumption, especially here in the US... which then in turn puts pressure on fisheries, soil, arable land, the air we breathe, and any other available resource we mistakenly believe/perceive to be infinite in supply.... We should all slow down, look around us, and see what we have done to ourselves and our planet.

  • KingSolomonNY

it wasn't as life like as this video. That was pretty obvious it wasn't real. I've googled a few androids since then and that was definitely the honda fit of the android market. haha

My friends take me too clubs like this in LA, but its the korean version and they call it bookings. They bring the women to you. Wow, I think the male hosting would actually be fun, I think I would actually like doing that, its would be good practice for listening and socializing, honestly.

  • mZdejavuZ

@coconizzuttz - ... er, the video was right there on my blog Edmar..... and as for blogging away, will do!

OMG! I want the robot seal, but yeah it's crazy that Japan can make such life like robots! Hmmmm.... maybe I shouldn't move there. hahahhaa. :P

  • mZdejavuZ

@P_u_d_g_y03 - Yeah the robot seal is cute...! ... LOL we all know that you'll eventually be living there for the rest of your life, Kat... . Or at least a good majority of your life!  ... No worries! I'll come visit you!!

  • P_u_d_g_y03

@mZdejavuZ - hmmm life with robots..... they will probably freak me out. LOL.

  • HeartLUST

thanks for sharing this...one of my professors had told of us the invention of robots, didn't know it got this far already....

  • Faithful_Spot

So for me, I think the real reason that the Japanese people aren't having children is because Japan doesn't have a difference, really, between childhood and adulthood. Because they are encouraged to rely on the group, they still feel like children (no responsibility. Somebody else will take care of it). But because nowadays they are encouraged to be also independent, they don't feel like they have to do what the government says when it says "have more children".

  • mZdejavuZ

@HeartLUST - Hey! Thanks for stopping by! :) And, yeah, no problem, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah it's crazy to think how far robots have "evolved"...

  • mZdejavuZ

@Faithful_Spot - Ooh wow, interesting perspective you bring to the table... Thanks for sharing your thoughts -- that's very interesting... Do you know a lot about Japanese culture? I know that their culture is very community/family-oriented (collectivism vs. individualism)... I've been to Japan for 2.5 weeks, and it was great... I want to go back in the future, for sure.

  • Faithful_Spot

@mZdejavuZ - Well, I'm not an expert. I've read some books that are pretty in depth, but I'm also pretty good with people.

What struck me the most when I was in Japan was the way the kids that were my age could go around and ride the public transportation and things like that, but they acted younger than me. If I acted the age that my host sister had acted toward my mother, my mom wouldn't let me ride the train on my own. She kinda acted like a child... with abilities. Like she could cook, but she never took on the responsibility of cooking... only for fun. She still relied on her mom to do all her laundry and to clean her room and things like that. Maybe that's not as weird as I think?

Besides that, Japanese are still treated as children until they are out of college and have their first job. But jobs are treated differently in Japan. They are your family, in a way, and you rely on your boss. It seem that they go from relying on their parents and teacher, to relying on their boss.
